Face it, heat rises!

Suggested by Bultaco

Learn to live with mother nature, not fight her!
When the hot summer months make upstairs bedrooms unbearably hot, consider moving your sleeping quarters to a cool basement environment.
Even without air conditioning, below-grade rooms are always cooler. But in summer, with your air conditioning turned on, no matter how well your house is designed, that upstairs bedroom is always the last room to cool off.
Save money on air conditioning by going with the flow...the flow of cool air, that is! Follow it right down the stairs and into your cool, summer "alternative/seasonal" bedroom.
No need to feel you're in the dungeon either. You'll be able to decorate AND set up an extra TV down there with the money you'll save on the AC.

  • Attic hatch

It may also help to open the attic hatch, this will increase the "stack effect" - hot air will rise into the attic and exit through it's vent, pulling in cool air from the windows.

  • Window A/C units

While it's true window A/C units are less efficient, it's even worse to try to cool the whole house a few degrees more just so one room on the upstairs level is comfortable, so a window A/C unit may be a good idea. In fact, some people tell me all they need is a window A/C unit in their bedroom - a lot cheaper than central air.
